Huron Superintendent Dennis Muratori has withdrawn from the Elyria superintendent search, an exit that comes on the heels of the Elyria school board announcing it would like to possibly look closer at the internal candidates who were eliminated after first-round interviews.

What this also means for Deputy Superintendent of Columbus Schools John Stanford is unknown at this time.

Stanford and Muratori hosted Elyria board members last week in their respective districts, but upon returning to Elyria, a special board meeting was convened to discuss the possibility of bringing Elyria High School Principal Tom Jama and district Director of Academic Services Ann Schloss back into contention.

The board has been criticized for eliminating Jama and Schloss so soon in the search process, but continued to explore Muratori and Stanford as candidates despite the backlash.

Muratori informed Steve Horton of the Ohio School Boards Association of his decision early Monday.

Muratori told Horton he remained excited about Elyria, but at this point leaving Huron would put the district in “limbo.” It would be very difficult for Huron to find a new superintendent to replace him this late in the year, he said.

Elyria Board President Kathryn Karpus wished Muratori well.

“It was a pleasure to meet with him and we wish him well as he makes decisions going forward in his career,” she said in an email. “We respect and admire his concern for the position of the Huron Board of Education.”

Questions remain as to what this does to the Elyria search.

Will Stanford remain the lone candidate?

Will Jama and Schloss accept the board’s invitation back into the search?

Amy Higgins, district spokeswoman, didn’t have those answers Monday night and said it will be up to the board to decide how it will proceed. The next scheduled board meeting is 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Elyria Administration Center, 42101 Griswold Road.

As for Jama and Schloss, neither has said publicly if they remained interested in the post. Both sought the position to take over for Superintendent Paul Rigda upon his retirement in July.

Their quick elimination was a shock to the community. Longtime school board member Don Boddy was so adamantly against it, he resigned from his post.

Boddy’s resignation lengthened the search process by forcing the remaining board members to take the time to find and appoint a new board member, certified public accountant Greg Elek.
